Montreal, Quebec (Canada), Saturday February 10th 2018 – After making a remarkable entry into the UFC and after the biggest victory of his career on Australian soil, the man considered by many to be the best Canadian prospect in quite some time to join the most prestigious mixed martial arts promotion in the world and his team received a phone call that changed everything. The new owners of the UFC (WME-IMG) made the decision to significantly increase their precautionary level for certain medical conditions.  In doing so, they decided to terminate Jonathan Meunier’s contract on the basis that they did not have enough data concerning the potential effects and risks related to intracranial surgery in the sport of MMA.

In March 2010, Jonathan had undergone such a procedure at Hotel Dieu hospital in Quebec City in order to remove an arteriovenous break from his brain. The surgery was performed successfully by neurosurgeon Dr. Geneviève Milot who then gave him the green light to pursue his combat sports career wothout any restrictions. Between 2010 and 2017, Jonathan passed extensive tests with flying colors to confirm Dr. Milot’s recommendation in addition to getting the same such approval from renowned neurologist Dr. Robert Filiatrault.  For these specialists and based on the excellent test results, the standard by which the new UFC owners should judge patients having undergone this type of surgery should be Jonathan Meunier.  Since the operation, Meunier has participated in 40 fights, including 9 as a professional, without any issue or side effect but more significantly without any change in the images of his brain. As stated by Dr. Filiatrault himself in his report: “Jonathan is not in any greater danger than anyone else practicing his sport. The surgery was a success amd there are no possible side effects thereof related to his sport.

The last few months have been difficult for the Quebec City athlete and, after a long soul-searching process, he has opted to show the world that he has all the tools to be considered one of the best 170-pounders on the planet. His greatest disappointment has become his greatest motivation and his trainingis now more intense than ever. A Jonathan Meunier that is hungry for victory has chosen to sign with the greatest Canadian MMA promotion in history, the prestigious TKO MMA.  Thus, it is in front of his hometown fans at Quebec City’s Videotron Centre next May that Meunier will make his big return to the cage in order to claim the vacant TKO welterweight championship. Many big names have worn that title in the past, including the legendary Georges St-Pierre as well as UFC veterans Sean Pierson, John Alessio and Jesse Bongfeldt. Will Jonathan Meunier be next?

TKO President Stephane Patry is very proud to add the dangerous purebred to his roster: “The addition of such a talented and charismatic athlete like Jonathan Meunier is great news for our organization and our fans. We are also very concerned with the health of athletes but after having consulted with neurological specialists, our doctors and the neurosurgeon that operates on Jonathan as well the Quebec athletic commission, I am very confident in our decision to go against the UFC’s position and welcome Jonathan with open arms.

More information on Jonathan and the supercard that will be presented at the Videotron Centre that will include 4 title fights will be unveiled at a TKO press conference to be held in Quebec City on February 21.
