Throughout its existence, the TKO promotion has always been keen on presenting not only the best Canadian talents, but also some of the best from around the globe. Names such as Sean Sherk, Rich Franklin, Urijah Faber and Hatsu Hioki have all competed in the organization prior to becoming players on the worldwide stage. On September 8, another name may be added to that list when hometown hero Alex Morgan takes on Brazilian sensation Joao Luiz “Andrezinho” Nogueira.
A member of the famous Nogueira family, he has definitely lived up to the standard established by his predecessors. The 32-year old is a veteran of 31 career fights, holding 24 victories. However it’s not just the fact the he wins so often that makes him dangerous, it’s how he wins. With a whopping 83% finish ratio, he has 9 knockouts and 11 submissions, proving he is just as dangerous on the feet as on the ground.
Granted he does have 7 losses, but he has only been finished once in his career and that was as a lightweight. On that very subject, it is important to note that Nogueira regularly competes as both a featherweight and a lightweight, therefore he should be much heavier come fight time than the 145 pounds he will have weighed in at 36 hours earlier.
Having registered victories in 9 of his last 10 fights, he comes to Montreal next week riding an incredible hot streak and has no intention of letting Alex Morgan slow him down. “I trained with American Top Team in Miami with some of UFC’s biggest stars in preparation for this fight” said Nogueira. “I also finished my camp in Brazil at Fight for Life with many local talents so I’m always improving. I trained hard for this fight and if he wants to test me, I’m ready for war.”
When it comes to the fight itself, Nogueira is ready for absolutely anything Morgan can bring to the table: “I’m an experienced fighter. I can fight standing up or on the ground; I feel comfortable anywhere. I’m gonna feel the fight and see what he wants to do.”
Despite his incredible record, Nogueira has only started breaking out internationally in the last year, having fought for ACB and now TKO. He is looking forward to seeing how far he can go in his chosen field. “I am very happy to be a member of TKO MMA. I want to fight on the best events in the world against the highest level of opponents. I’d love to join the UFC someday but for now I’m looking forward to showing the Canadian crowd my MMA skills.”
